New Research Shows That CBD Can Reduce Cigarette Consumption

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that acts on the endocannabinoid system in a variety of ways that benefit the body. One such action is an antagonistic action at the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors. The CB1 receptors are notable because they have been shown to modulate the rewarding effects of nicotine and other drugs such as ethanol, methamphetamine, and morphine. In the research funded by the Medical Research Council, UK, smokers engaged in a double-blind placebo controlled study. The placebo group noticed no change in smoking habits while the CBD treated group smoked 40% less during one week of treatment. The data has suggested that CBD may be an effective way to reduce cigarette use in tobacco smokers and has established CBD as a potential treatment for nicotine addiction; in addition, the pilot study has warranted more, larger studies in the future.

CBD Reduces Withdrawal Symptoms

Some of the most prevalent symptoms of withdrawal from smoking are anxiety, insomnia, and irritability. This is due to desensitization of neuron receptors in the brain which can be natural or caused by drugs such as nicotine and THC. Quitting smoking can cause the brain to crave the positive reward mechanisms that it has become accustomed to, and CBD can help quell these cravings by stimulating the receptors of the nervous system. In addition to fighting withdrawal, CBD can be used to reduce the symptoms (anxiety, insomnia, irritability) in all patients regardless of the cause.

Vaping CBD

Vaping has become an increasingly popular method of quitting cigarettes and has become widely known as a safe alternative to smoking. While vaping alone can help quit smoking (which is harmful to the lungs), often times it does contain nicotine which still has harmful effects on the nervous system and the body. Vaping CBD can not only help users quit smoking, it can also reduce nicotine cravings and has been shown to have only beneficial effects on the endocannabinoid system and the body. Vaping is an easy, harmless, and even enjoyable way to consume CBD.
